Islamabad: Pakistan is a densely populated, low-income country with an estimated 21 million people. The general population’s lack of awareness, unhygienic lifestyles and poor sanitary conditions in populated areas are the main causes of the country’s endemic prevalence of various communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Studies on the prevalence and incidence of cancer in Pakistan are very few. Previously, there were just two cancer registers located in Karachi and Lahore; and recently in 2015, the Pakistan Health Research Council (PHRC) in Islamabad developed a National Cancer Registry.

KP government approves Rs 1 billion free cancer treatment programme

Peshawar: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has approved a project to provide free treatment facilities to cancer patients in the province at the cost of Rs 1 billion. Provincial health department officials said that under the programme, free medicines will be provided to cancer patients at the Hayatabad Medical Complex, Khyber Teaching Hospital in Peshawar and Dera Ismail Khan and Abbottabad.

ISI chief appears in media for the first time in national history

Islamabad: Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) head made an unexpected appearance in the media for the first time in national history. He held a joint press conference in Rawalpindi with the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) spokesperson, Lt. Gen. Babar Iftikhar.

Director General ISI, Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum (pictured), responded to allegations and criticism of his agency over the murder of senior journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya.
